buying into tomorrow

"There are some things one can only achieve by a deliberate leap in the opposite direction."
Franz Kafka

Above is a picture of our new home, we'll be posting on Facebook more images in the weeks to come. But as I thought about what to write after a couple of weeks of silence I thought about the past two years and the hard choices we made that eventually led to me sitting on my own porch in a wonderful neighborhood writing this Blog post.

It really was a hardship to first make the decision to immigrate and then actually go through with leaving our home in Munich and moving to a new place, finding new employment, finding a place to live, finding ways to function in a new culture that needed different things as foundational necessities.

But for us the transition period is nearing its end and so begins a new stage in our life here in America.

Last Thursday Bethany and I signed a small hillock of papers that made us homeowners in America. This may seem like a pretty normal things until one pauses long enough to realize I was born in Ballymena, Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland. This purchase represents a commitment and a reframing of a lot of our tomorrows. A friend told me last year that the one true way of knowing if you are truly committed to a place is if you have bought a grave in that place. While we haven't reached that point of commitment I feel buying a house to make it into our home is a big step in that direction.

Two years ago we took a deliberate leap in the opposite direction and have landed in a place and position that is rife with possibilities.

What are you buying into tomorrow?
