slapping god
"I think God, in creating man, somewhat overestimated his ability."
Oscar Wilde
There are times I wonder if my God ever just foams at the mouth and loses all sense of compassion and lashes out without care of the consequences.
Can you imagine your "god" pistol-whipping someone for being publicly offensive? Or just snapping and "slapping silly" the incurably Ignorant for verbally demonstrating their terminal ignorance?
I "pride" myself (humor intended) for embracing a passive posture towards those who are different from me. Despite my reluctance to embrace violence, absolutely no one who knows me would ever accuse me of being nice or kind.
One of the ways I've developed to restrict the times I feel compelled to verbally slap someone who has offended me deeply is to only interact with people who have something in their life that I "celebrate" without restraint. If you want to disagree with things I care deeply about I recommend taking the time first to allow me to fall head over heels in "like" with who you are. I'm an incredibly passionate person. My friends tell me it is awesome being the focus of that passion when it is positive! If I like you the whole world will know why I like you! I also protect people I like with a ferocity that is quite literally Biblical in its proportions!
I "celebrate" those I know and like. I "tolerate" those I don't know and disagree with. I tend to protect those I celebrate and eventually slap (verbally) those I tolerate.
There is an idea that has circulated this planet for millennium that God merely tolerates humanity and he, like me, will eventually be provoked into slapping us all!
I'm convinced God celebrates us all! I believe this relieves Him of having to tolerate our less than awesome tendency to be intolerable to one another and Him.
My God simply doesn't have any intention of becoming a "slapping god." He is far too involved with liking the human beings He created. This makes Him a "hugging god"
Which God do you expect to turn up? Celebrate or Tolerate? Hug or Hurt?
